Canada 150

In 2017 Canada will celebrate 150 years since its confederation. The Canadian government commissioned type designer Raymond Larabie to adapt Mesmerize into an official national typeface.

The typeface includes all Latin characters and accents, common Cyrillic characters, and syllabic and diacritical elements contained in Canada’s Aboriginal languages. The typeface is provided in two weights: light and regular.

Oddly, if you want to use the official font you must apply for permission.

Bill 78 and the casserole protest

From Common Dreams:

Bill 78 not only “enraged civil libertarians and legal experts but also seems to have galvanized ordinary Quebecers.” Since the law passed Friday, people in Montreal neighborhoods have appeared on their balconies and in front of their houses to defiantly bang pots and pans in a clanging protest every night at 8 p.m.

Canadian Stereotype Comics

Alright so I abandoned the comic I was making yesterday when I watched the closing ceremonies to the Olympics. Did you see that? The giant beavers, hockey players, moose, mounties? The dancing leaf babes? The voyageurs and the lumberjacks? It was unbelievable. And so here in remembrance of that display are some Canadian stereotypes to enjoy.
